These easy Monte Cristo Sliders combine savory ham, turkey, and melted Swiss cheese with sweet raspberry preserves, brushed with a rich egg butter glaze and baked to golden perfection.

Monte Cristo Sliders
Why This Recipe Works:
  • Hydrophobic Cheese Barrier: Placing the Swiss cheese directly on the bottom bun prevents the ham's moisture from making the bread soggy.
  • Emulsified Egg Glaze: Whisking egg into the melted butter creates a beautiful, golden crust that mimics traditional French toast without getting mushy.
  • Controlled Sweetness: Spreading the raspberry preserves on the top bun keeps the sugar away from the direct heat of the pan bottom, preventing bitter burning.

The first time I attempted these sliders for a New Year's Eve party, my kitchen ended up smelling like burnt sugar and disappointment. I had bought a cheap, watery deli ham that leaked moisture during baking, turning the bottom buns into a sad, grey sponge.

I sat on the cold linoleum, scraping blackened raspberry jam off my baking sheet. I swore off hosting forever.

Bear with me here, because the physics of a slider bake are surprisingly unforgiving when you deal with high-moisture proteins and high-sugar preserves simultaneously. When cheap deli meat heats up, its protein matrix collapses, releasing excess water directly into the bottom bun. Meanwhile, the sugar in the jam reaches its burning point long before the cheese melts, leaving you with a charred top and a soggy bottom.

To fix this, we create a hydrophobic barrier by layering the Swiss cheese first, followed by dry, thinly sliced tavern ham. Brushing the tops with a rich egg-and-butter wash mimics the classic custard base of our Blueberry Stuffed French Toast so the glaze clings to every nook and cranny.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (12 count) Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced tavern ham (patted dry with paper towels)
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli turkey breast (patted dry)
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese (cut into quarters)
  • 3 tablespoons raspberry preserves
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (for dusting)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Slice the entire block of Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally to create one large top and one large bottom. Place the bottom half into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Spread the raspberry preserves evenly across the cut side of the top half of the rolls.
  4. Layer half of the Swiss cheese quarters over the bottom rolls, ensuring complete coverage to protect the bread.
  5. Layer the dry ham and turkey slices over the cheese, then top with the remaining Swiss cheese quarters.
  6. Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese layer. Press down gently with the palm of your hand to compress the sliders.
  7. In a small bowl, vigorously whisk together the melted butter, egg, and Diamond Crystal kosher salt until fully emulsified. Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls.
  8. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and the tops are a deep golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar immediately before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Salt Conversion: I highly recommend using Diamond Crystal kosher salt; if you only have Morton's kosher salt, reduce the volume by half (use 1/4 teaspoon instead of 1/2 teaspoon) to avoid over-salting.
  • Cheese Science: Swiss cheese is selected because its high calcium-to-phosphate ratio allows it to melt smoothly into a cohesive protein matrix without breaking into a greasy pool of oil.
  • Workflow Warning: Keep a close eye on the oven during the last 5 minutes of baking; the sugar in the Hawaiian rolls and the egg wash can transition from beautifully golden to bitterly charred in a matter of seconds.
  • Storage Behavior: After a day in the fridge, the starches in the bread will undergo retrogradation, making them firm; reheating in an oven or air fryer is mandatory to gelatinize those starches and restore the soft texture.

What to Serve with Monte Cristo Sliders

Complete your party spread by pairing these sweet and savory sliders with bright, acidic sides that balance the rich cheese and butter.

  • A crisp green salad tossed with a sharp lemon vinaigrette.
  • Tangy dill pickle spears to contrast the sweet raspberry jam.
  • An extra bowl of warm raspberry preserves for dipping.
  • Crispy sweet potato fries seasoned with sea salt.
  • A light, sparkling beverage like apple cider or prosecco.
  • Our festive Breakfast Pigs in Cinnamon Rolls to round out a holiday brunch.

How to Store and Reheat Leftover Sliders

If you happen to have leftovers, wrap them tightly in aluminum foil before sliding them into the refrigerator. They will keep reasonably well for up to three days, though the bread will inevitably lose some of its initial pillowy softness.

Do not use the microwave.

Microwaving these sliders will turn the bread into a rubbery, sad mess and cause the cheese to separate. Instead, pop them back into a 350°F oven for about ten minutes.

An air fryer is also a fantastic option if you are reheating just one or two sliders. Set it to 320°F for four to five minutes to get that top crust beautifully crispy again.

Easy Ingredient Substitutes for Sliders

If you need to adapt this recipe based on what is currently in your pantry, here are some reliable swaps.

  1. Raspberry Preserves: Blackberry or apricot jam work beautifully as sweet alternatives.
  2. Swiss Cheese: Gruyère or Provolone offer a similar meltability and mild flavor profile.
  3. Hawaiian Rolls: Brioche slider buns can be used, though you may want to add a tiny pinch of sugar to the egg wash to mimic the sweetness.
  4. Tavern Ham: Smoked turkey or even leftover holiday ham sliced thin will work perfectly. If you prefer a chicken-based alternative, try our Maple Chicken Turkey Bacon Sliders.

Go ahead and whip these up for your next game night or lazy Sunday brunch. Just tap your tongs against your hip, take a deep breath, and watch them disappear from the platter in seconds.
