These easy Caprese Salad Skewers feature juicy cherry tomatoes, creamy marinated mozzarella, and fresh basil drizzled with a rich balsamic glaze for the perfect party appetizer.

Caprese Salad Skewers
Why This Recipe Works:
  • Marinating the mozzarella pearls beforehand ensures every bite is seasoned to the core, rather than just on the surface.
  • Using a sharp, thin skewer prevents the cherry tomatoes from bursting and losing their sweet, flavorful juices.
  • A high-quality balsamic reduction adds a thick, syrupy sweetness that clings to the skewers instead of pooling at the bottom of the plate.

I will never forget the humid July afternoon I tried to assemble eighty of these tiny bites for my sister's backyard bridal shower using cheap, flimsy toothpicks that snapped under the slightest pressure. My fingertips were stained a bruised shade of basil-green, and half of my tomatoes had split open like tiny, watery casualties on the cutting board.

It was a complete mess.

The real issue comes down to cellular structure and moisture control. When you pierce a cherry tomato with a blunt skewer, you tear the pericarp, causing the interior locular gel to leak everywhere and turn your beautiful platter into a soggy swamp.

Worse yet, cheap, rubbery mozzarella pearls won't absorb any seasoning. They just sit there, squeaking against your teeth like a wet balloon.

To fix this, we need to exploit a bit of food science. We use a sharp bamboo skewer to cleanly slice through the tomato skin without crushing the walls.

Then, we marinate the cheese. Fat-soluble flavor compounds in herbs cling beautifully to the lipids in cheese, transforming bland mozzarella into a savory powerhouse.

Trust me on this one.

If you love the classic flavors of a Caprese Pasta Salad but want something portable, these skewers are hands down the easiest crowd-pleaser you can make.

Ingredients

  • 24 cherry tomatoes (sweet varieties like Sun Gold or Grape work best)
  • 24 mini mozzarella pearls (ciliegine size)
  • 24 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1/2 cup high-quality balsamic vinegar
  • 24 wooden or bamboo skewers (4-inch size)

Directions

  1. Reduce the balsamic: In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, bring the balsamic vinegar to a gentle simmer. Let it reduce for about 5 to 7 minutes until it coats the back of a spoon, then pour it into a small bowl to cool and thicken.
  2. Marinate the cheese: In a medium bowl, gently toss the mozzarella pearls with the extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. Let them sit for 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  3. Prep the basil: Wash and thoroughly dry the basil leaves. If they are large, gently fold them in half so they match the size of the tomatoes and cheese.
  4. Assemble the skewers: Thread one marinated mozzarella pearl onto a skewer, followed by a folded basil leaf, and finish with a cherry tomato. Repeat for all 24 skewers.
  5. Garnish and serve: Arrange the skewers on a serving platter. Just before serving, drizzle the cooled balsamic reduction generously over the top.

Notes

  • I highly recommend using Diamond Crystal kosher salt; if you only have fine table salt, cut the measurement in half (use 1/4 teaspoon instead of 1/2 teaspoon) to avoid an over-salted bite.
  • The turgor pressure inside the cherry tomatoes keeps them plump; using a super sharp skewer prevents tearing the cell walls, which would otherwise cause the tomato to collapse and leak its juices.
  • When reducing the balsamic vinegar, watch it like a hawk during the final two minutes. It transitions from a perfect, glossy syrup to a bitter, burnt, rock-hard caramel incredibly fast.
  • While these are best served fresh, if you must make them ahead, store the assembled skewers without the balsamic drizzle. The acid in the vinegar will break down the delicate basil leaves and turn them black within an hour.
  • If you want to expand this into a larger spread, these make a fantastic companion to Antipasto Skewers for a colorful party platter.

Serving Suggestions

These skewers are incredibly versatile and bring a bright, fresh pop of color to any table. Here are a few of my favorite ways to serve them to make your gathering feel extra special:

  • Arrange them on a rustic wooden board alongside a bowl of Mediterranean Bruschetta for the ultimate Italian-inspired appetizer spread.
  • Serve them as a fresh, light side dish next to grilled mains like Bourbon Chicken Skewers.
  • Lay them flat on a bed of fresh arugula to keep them from rolling around on the platter while adding a peppery bite.
  • Pair them with a chilled glass of dry rosĂ© or a refreshing Cucumber Mint Mocktail on a hot summer afternoon.
  • Drizzle them with a spoonful of homemade basil pesto instead of balsamic glaze for a vibrant, herbaceous twist.

Storage and Reheating

Do not freeze these.

The delicate water structure of both the fresh tomatoes and the soft mozzarella will completely collapse upon thawing. You will end up with a mushy, watery mess that is entirely unappetizing.

Instead, store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. The basil will wilt slightly, but they will still taste delicious.

If you are planning a party, you can easily assemble the tomato, basil, and cheese on the skewers up to 24 hours in advance. Just lay them flat on a tray, cover them tightly with plastic wrap, and keep them chilled. Be absolutely sure to hold off on the balsamic drizzle until the very last second before your guests arrive to keep everything looking pristine.

Serve them cold.

Ingredient Substitutes

If you don't have all the classic ingredients on hand, don't sweat it. You can easily swap things out with these simple alternatives:

  1. Cherry Tomatoes: If you can't find good cherry tomatoes, use chunks of ripe heirloom tomatoes, or try a Chopped Peach Caprese Salad variation for a sweet, summery twist.
  2. Mozzarella Pearls: Cubes of mild provolone or even feta chunks work beautifully, though they will offer a saltier, firmer bite.
  3. Fresh Basil: If basil is out of season, a small dollop of store-bought pesto on each mozzarella ball works wonders, or swap in fresh mint leaves.
  4. Balsamic Reduction: A high-quality aged balsamic vinegar can be used straight from the bottle without reducing, or use a sweet pomegranate molasses glaze instead.

At the end of the day, there is a reason this classic combination never goes out of style. It is simple, honest, and absolutely perfect when the ingredients are allowed to shine. I hope these little skewers bring a bit of effortless joy to your next gathering, or even just a quiet Tuesday night on the patio. Let me know how they turn out for you, and happy skewering!
