So, I foolishly poured plain yogurt and whole blueberries into a cheap plastic ice tray, shoved it into the freezer, and hoped for the best.

The science behind this failure is simple: the high water content in the berries and low-fat yogurt crystallized into a solid, tooth-cracking ice matrix.

The fix is incredibly simple: we need to emulsify the berries into a high-fat yogurt base to prevent those massive ice crystals from forming.

By using full-fat Greek yogurt, the fat globules coat the water molecules, keeping the texture velvety and safe for canine teeth.

I also added a splash of raw honey to naturally lower the freezing point, ensuring the treats remain bite-able straight from the freezer.

Ingredients

• 1 cup (245g) full-fat plain Greek yogurt (no added xylitol or sweeteners)
• 1/2 cup (75g) fresh blueberries
• 1/2 cup (75g) fresh strawberries, hulled
• 1 tablespoon raw honey

Directions

1. Set up three small bowls. In the first bowl, mix half of the plain Greek yogurt with the raw honey until smooth.
2. In a food processor, blend the remaining Greek yogurt with the fresh blueberries until completely smooth and purple. Pour into the second bowl.
3. Rinse the food processor, then blend the strawberries until they form a smooth red puree. Pour into the third bowl.
4. Spoon a small layer of the strawberry puree into the bottom of your silicone paw-print molds. Tap the mold firmly against the counter to remove air bubbles.
5. Carefully layer the plain honey-yogurt mixture over the strawberry layer, followed by the blueberry-yogurt mixture to create a patriotic red, white, and blue effect.
6. Freeze the molds flat on a baking sheet for at least 4 hours, or until completely solid, before popping them out to serve.

Notes

• I highly recommend Fage Total 5% Plain Greek Yogurt (use 245g for 1 cup) because its low moisture content prevents icy separation.
• The lactic acid and active cultures in Greek yogurt support canine gut health, but the high fat content is what actually prevents the water molecules from forming a rigid, tooth-cracking crystalline structure.
• Do not rush the layering process; if you pour the mixtures too quickly without tapping the mold against your hip or counter, the layers will bleed together into a muddy purple instead of distinct patriotic stripes.
• After about a month in a standard freezer bag, the outer layer of the treats may develop a slight freezer-burn frost, so keep them tightly double-wrapped to preserve the fresh berry aroma.
