A warm, chewy dessert pizza loaded with rich, melted chocolate chips and a hint of sea salt, built on a perfect sweet dough.

Sweet dessert pizza topped with melted chocolate chips
Why This Recipe Works:
  • Fat-enriched dough limits gluten formation, ensuring a soft, cookie-like texture rather than a tough, bready bite.
  • Baking the crust first (par-baking) prevents the chocolate chips from burning under intense heat while the dough cooks through.
  • A touch of coarse salt balances the intense sweetness of the melted chocolate, drawing out the deeper cocoa notes.

My first attempt at making a sweet pizza happened during a humid July sleepover in 2011, using a dusty box of biscuit mix and a handful of stale butterscotch chips. I ended up with a dry, bready dome that tasted mostly like baking powder. The waxy chips refused to melt, sitting on top like sad, scorched pebbles.

I actually cried over that pan.

But failure is a stubborn teacher. I spent years figuring out how to get a dessert crust that stays tender instead of turning into cardboard.

Think about this in terms of physics: a standard savory pizza dough relies on a strong gluten network to hold up heavy sauce and cheese, but a dessert crust needs a tender, cookie-like crumb. If you use a standard dough without adjusting the fat content, the high oven heat will dry it out completely. By incorporating a bit of butter and sugar directly into our homemade pizza dough, we coat the flour proteins and limit gluten development. This simple tweak keeps the base incredibly soft, chewy, and rich.

Now, we top it with high-quality chocolate chips that melt into a glossy, decadent pool. It is hands down the easiest crowd-pleasing dessert you will make this week. Trust me on this one.

Ingredients

  • 1 batch quick rise pizza dough (or standard sweet dough)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1.5 cups high-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 0.5 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 0.5 tsp Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C). If you are using a pizza stone, place it on the middle rack to heat up.
  2. Roll or stretch your dough on a sheet of parchment paper into a 12-inch circle, pressing your knuckles gently into the edges to create a slight rim.
  3. Brush the melted butter evenly over the surface of the dough, then sprinkle the granulated sugar across the buttered base.
  4. Par-bake the crust in the preheated oven for 7 minutes until it is puffed and very lightly golden but not fully browned.
  5. Carefully remove the crust from the oven. Immediately scatter the semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips evenly over the hot crust.
  6. Return the pizza to the oven for 3 to 4 minutes, just until the chocolate chips are soft and shiny.
  7. Use the back of a spoon or an offset spatula to gently spread the melted chocolate into a smooth, glossy layer.
  8. Sprinkle with the Diamond Crystal kosher salt and dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • I highly recommend using Diamond Crystal kosher salt for the finishing touch; if you only have standard table salt, cut the measurement in half (use 1/4 teaspoon) to avoid an overly salty bite.
  • High-quality chocolate chips contain cocoa butter which undergoes precise crystallization; cheap, waxy store brands contain stabilizers that prevent them from melting into a smooth, glossy pool.
  • Do not add the chocolate chips to the raw dough at the beginning of the bake, or the sugar in the chocolate will scorch and turn bitter before the crust is fully cooked.
  • Leftovers will firm up as the chocolate cools and solidifies, turning into a delicious, chewy chocolate-bark-style flatbread that is surprisingly good cold.
  • If you want a fruitier twist on this concept, check out our fruity pizza which uses a sugar cookie base instead of yeast dough.

Serving Suggestions

This dessert pizza is best enjoyed warm while the chocolate is still gooey and spreadable. Here are a few ways to plate it and make it even more special:

  • Top with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream right in the center before slicing.
  • Drizzle with warm caramel sauce or a spoonful of raspberry coulis for a gourmet touch.
  • Scatter fresh sliced strawberries or raspberries over the melted chocolate layer.
  • Serve alongside a hot cup of coffee or a homemade cherry vanilla latte to balance the sweetness.
  • Sprinkle toasted sliced almonds or chopped pecans over the top for a satisfying crunch.

Storage and Reheating

Do not throw away your leftover slices.

Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. If you put them in the fridge, the crust will dry out and lose its tender chew.

To reheat, avoid the microwave at all costs. It turns the crust into a rubbery, sad mess.

Instead, slide the slices onto a baking sheet and warm them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about five minutes. This revives the crust's crisp edges and melts the chocolate back to its original gooey glory.

Ingredient Substitutes

If you need to swap ingredients based on what is in your pantry, here are the best tested substitutes:

  1. Pizza Dough: If you don't have yeast dough, a pre-made puff pastry sheet or even a rolled-out sugar cookie dough works beautifully, though the bake times will vary.
  2. Chocolate Chips: Dark chocolate chunks or chopped chocolate bars can replace the semi-sweet chips for a more intense, less sweet flavor profile.
  3. Granulated Sugar: Coconut sugar or brown sugar can be sprinkled on the crust instead of white sugar to add a subtle caramel undertone.
  4. Butter: Coconut oil can be brushed onto the dough instead of melted butter for a dairy-free alternative on the crust.

This chocolate chip dessert pizza has become my absolute favorite way to rescue a chaotic Friday night. It is messy, warm, and completely unpretentious—exactly what a good dessert should be.
