Baked Cuban Sliders With Melted Cheese and Sliced Ham.
These baked Cuban sliders feature layers of savory sliced ham, tender roasted pork, tangy pickles, and melted Swiss cheese, all brushed with a zesty mustard-butter glaze.
- The steam created under the aluminum foil traps moisture, ensuring the Swiss cheese melts perfectly without drying out the ham.
- A melted butter glaze infused with yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder mimics the classic mojo-inspired tang.
- Hawaiian rolls provide the perfect sweet contrast to the salty, savory layers of deli ham and dill pickles.
I still remember the humid July afternoon I tried to feed fifteen hungry swim-meet teenagers with a single, poorly planned platter of traditional Cuban sandwiches.
My forearms actually ached from pressing down on my heavy cast-iron skillet, trying desperately to mimic a real plancha press while the cheese stubbornly refused to melt.
It was a total disaster.
The main issue with making large batches of pressed sandwiches is thermal mass; standard home pans simply cannot hold enough heat to melt thick Swiss cheese before the bread burns to a bitter, blackened crisp.
That is where these baked sliders come in to save your sanity.
While I love a good breakfast option like our Sausage Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sliders with Syrup Glaze, these savory lunch-friendly bites are my absolute go-to for game days.
By using a slab of sweet Hawaiian rolls, we can assemble a dozen sandwiches at once and let the oven do the heavy lifting, much like we do with our popular Hot Italian Sub Sliders, which saves you from standing over a hot stove while your guests are enjoying themselves.
Let's get baking.

Ingredients
- 1 package (12 count) Hawaiian sweet rolls
- 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli ham
- 1/2 pound sliced roasted pork tenderloin
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
- 1/2 cup dill pickle slices (patted dry)
- 1/4 cup yellow mustard
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- Slice the entire slab of Hawaiian rolls horizontally in half using a long serrated knife, keeping the individual rolls connected. Slicing the rolls can feel a tad clumsy, so take your time to keep the cut even.
- Place the bottom half of the rolls into the prepared baking dish and spread the yellow mustard evenly across the cut side.
- Layer on half of the Swiss cheese, followed by the sliced ham, roasted pork, dill pickles fished out of the jar, and the remaining Swiss cheese.
- Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese layer to close the sandwiches.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and kosher salt.
- Brush the butter mixture generously over the tops of the rolls, ensuring the mustard glaze clings to the rolls and drips down the sides.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
- Slice into individual sliders and serve warm. </
Notes
- I highly recommend using Diamond Crystal kosher salt; if you only have Morton's or standard table salt, cut the measurement in half to avoid an overly salty glaze.
- Bear with me here: Swiss cheese is crucial because its high moisture content and specific pH level allow it to melt smoothly into a cohesive protein matrix without breaking into an oily mess.
- Pat your dill pickles completely dry with a paper towel before layering them; otherwise, the excess moisture will steam the bottom bun and turn it into a soggy disaster.
- Leftover sliders store surprisingly well in the fridge, but the bread will lose its crispness over time as it absorbs the mustard and pickle juices.
Serving Suggestions
These sliders are a crowd-pleasing powerhouse on their own, but pairing them with the right sides turns them into a complete, unforgettable meal.
- Serve alongside a bowl of Dill pickle coleslaw for an extra punch of acidity and crunch.
- Pair with crispy potato chips or seasoned french fries for a classic pub-style experience.
- Offer a side of sweet plantain chips to complement the savory pork and sweet Hawaiian rolls.
- Set out extra yellow mustard or a garlic aioli for dipping.
Storage and Reheating
If you happen to have leftovers, wrap the cooled sliders tightly in aluminum foil or place them in an airtight container.
They will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days.
Never use a microwave here.
The microwave will turn the sweet Hawaiian rolls into a rubbery, sad mess that ruins the entire texture.
Instead, place the sliders back in a 350°F oven, covered with foil, for about 10 minutes until warmed through, then flash them under the broiler for 60 seconds to crisp up the tops.
Ingredient Substitutes
If you don't have all the traditional ingredients on hand, you can easily swap them out without losing the spirit of the dish.
- Hawaiian Rolls: Substitute with brioche slider buns or savory butter rolls if you prefer a less sweet base.
- Roasted Pork: If you don't have roasted pork, double up on the deli ham or use sliced turkey breast for a different twist, similar to our Puff Pastry Ham Stacks.
- Swiss Cheese: Provolone or mild white cheddar can stand in, though you'll lose that classic nutty Swiss flavor.
- Yellow Mustard: Dijon mustard can be used for the interior spread if you prefer a sharper, more sophisticated bite. </
These sliders are hands down the easiest way to feed a crowd without losing your mind or spending hours at the stove. Give them a try at your next game day or family gathering, and watch them disappear in seconds!
